Uber adds VoIP functionality to improve communication between riders and drivers

Global ride sharing market leader Uber has continued to make improvements to its services recently in an attempt to continue its dominance in the space. We saw the company unveil a new app for its drivers, release Uber Lite for low-end Android devices, and allow users to book rides on behalf of others. Today the company is adding VoIP support to improve communication between riders and drivers.

Currently, the Uber app allows riders and drivers to text one another using the SMS protocol, chat within the app or use standard voice calls. With VoIP (voice over IP), Uber will make use of Wi-Fi or cellular data to connect the two parties.

Uber drivers may also find it easier to use the VoIP feature instead of their dedicated phone app, as the former will allow them to stay inside the Uber platform and continue navigating the streets while talking to a rider. Using VoIP can also be cheaper for both parties than racking up the minutes on your phone plan.
