Netflix cancels Marvel’s Luke Cage after two seasons

One week after canceling Marvel's Iron Fist, and on the same day Daredevil season 3 was launched, Netflix has canceled Luke Cage. The show was in the process of developing its third season, making the cancellation even more disappointing.

"Unfortunately, Marvel’s Luke Cage will not return for a third season," Marvel and Netflix said in a joint statement on Friday. "Everyone at Marvel Television and Netflix is grateful to the dedicated showrunner, writers, cast and crew who brought Harlem’s Hero to life for the past two seasons, and to all the fans who have supported the series."

The writers’ room under showrunner Cheo Hodari Coker had reportedly been working for around six months producing scripts and taking notes from Netflix and Marvel on the Mike Colter led show. With the show being so far along in its production process, the season 3 order was almost a foregone conclusion by all concerned.

Picking up from where the show concluded in season 2, detailed drafts for the first half of the 10-episode projected third season were delivered to Marvel and Netflix this week. According to reports, creative differences and rising tensions over the past month were to blame for the sudden cancellation.

There were also reported issues regarding changing the deal for the planned Luke Cage third season from the original 13 episodes to 10 episodes.

At this point, there are no plans for owner Marvel to resurrect Luke Cage on the upcoming Disney streaming service. But we want to remain optimistic that Luke will join his fellow defender Danny Rand in being resurrected on another Marvel property.
