Motorola will directly update first generation Moto devices to Android 5.1

According to David Schuster, Motorola's Software product manager, the company is planning to skip the Android 5.0.2 update, and head directly to Android 5.1 for their first generation Moto devices.

In a post on his Google+ page, the executive stated that Motorola was simultaneously testing both builds of Android on the first-gen Motorola Moto X, Motorola Moto E and Motorola Moto G LTE.

According to Schuster, Motorola decided that with all of the improvements found with the latest Android build, it would be better for Motorola customers if these handsets were updated directly to Android 5.1 from KitKat. Motorola does have some experience with Android 5.1 running on a Moto device, as the Motorola Moto G Google Play edition, has already started receiving the OTA update to Android 5.1, making it the first of the Google Play edition handsets to receive this particular build.

Schuster didn't mention when the Android 5.1 update will be sent out to the aforementioned Motorola Moto phones. Considering that the manufacturer has already been testing the new build, it shouldn't be too long before Motorola starts pushing out Android 5.1 to the first-gen Moto models. Hopefully the first-gen Moto X won't face the same delay it faced with the Android 5.0 update, which was blamed on the older Snapdragon S4 Pro CPU which powers the smartphone.
