Microsoft OneDrive updated with several new features

Microsoft has updated its cloud service OneDrive with several new features and enhancements. Among the new features are Albums and tags for OneDrive which are now available on OneDrive for iOS, and will be coming to Android and Windows Phone soon.

The update is a part of the one Windows 10 experience which Microsoft plans to offer across all Windows devices, and its apps available on other platforms.

Albums

Microsoft has introduced a new way for users to manage their photos on OneDrive. Albums unlike traditional folders, let your photos stand front and center,with larger thumbnails and edge to edge photos arranged in a beautiful collage.

Selecting a photo opens its full-screen view, allowing you to access the metadata under a pop-up menu. You can add photos from multiple folders in different locations on your OneDrive to an album... When you share an album, your friends will be able to enjoy the content in the new interface, which will automatically adjust to the layout of your device, whether it is a desktop, mobile or OneDrive app.

Tags

Microsoft has also introduced a feature called Tags to OneDrive. The new Tags view (see the above screenshot) filters images based on your top tags, both manually and automatically-generated ones.

As shown above, it's also possible to search for photos based on tags, time, location or text that is extracted from images themselves, as well as for Office/PDF docs by text inside of them.

Moreover, OneDrive can now automatically recognize content in photos, courtesy of Bing technology and image recognition by Microsoft Research. Additionally, Windows 10’s built-in Cortana voice assistant will be able to perform searches across your OneDrive. This opens whole new possibilities like automatically grouped collections of photos and searching for things like “people,” “dogs,” “whiteboard,” “beach,” “sunsets,” and more.

Microsoft is also introducing a new feature to OneDrive called Weekend Recap, which will essentially find a create a collage of photos based on the pictures you capture during a given weekend.

Additionally, with Windows 10 Microsoft plans to include the ability to automatically upload computer screenshots and photos from digital cameras to the new “Screenshots” and “Camera Imports” folder on OneDrive, respectively. This functionality may also be offered to OneDrive users on Windows 7 and Windows 8. Microsoft is also updating the photos app on Windows 10 to have native OneDrive support.

Microsoft is also integration OneDrive with Outlook.com allowing users to save attachements directly from an email to OneDrive with a single click.
