Asus ZenFone 2 officially announced with 64-bit Intel Atom CPU and 4GB of RAM

Earlier today, Asus unveiled several new devices at its CES 2015 event in Las Vegas. Among them was the successor to its popular ZenFone series – the Asus ZenFone 2 which notably offers 4GB of RAM.

There are actually two variants of the ZenFone 2 – one offers 4GB while the other offers 2GB. The larger amount of RAM will likely be reserved for the model which offers more storage.

The ZenFone 2 offers dimensions of 6.0 x 3.03 x 0.43 in (152.5 x 77.2 x 10.9 mm) and has a 72% screen-to-body ratio. The handset has a 5.5 inch display with a 1080 x 1920 pixel resolution, which results in a 403ppi pixel density.

The ZenFone 2 has a rear-placed volume rocker and a shell with a brushed metal texture, features made popular on the LG G3. Asus promises a number of special “Transfusion” and “Illusion” models with rather unique shells – the former line combines two colors, while the latter offers some funky-looking patterns.

The camera at the back is a 13-megapixel unit with 5 element, f/2.0 aperture lens, complemented by a dual-color “Real Tone” LED flash. At the front, we’re looking at a respectable, 5-megapixel selfie snapper with wide-angled (85-degree) lens and an option to shoot panoramas. Asus also made it clear over and over again that its PixelMaster software is available with both cams and offers goodies such as a low light shooting mode that can supposedly snap photos that are up to 400% brighter.

The Asus ZenFone 2 is outfitted with a 3000mAh Lithium Polymer battery, which supports fast charging and should recuperate to 60% of its total capacity in as little as 39 minutes.

The high end variant of the ZenFone 2 powered by a 2.3GHz 64-bit quad-core Intel Atom Z3580 processor. You also get a PowerVR G6430 GPU with OpenGL 3.0 support. The handset also comes with dual-SIM, LTE connectivity and microSD for storage expansion.

On the software side you have Android 5.0 Lollipop with the Asus Zen UI on top. The company has worked a few new tricks into the OS, including actions and app shortcuts tied to gestures, special one-handed and “Kids” modes, and even support for custom themes and icon packs.

The Asus ZenFone 2 will be available for purchase as soon as March, though its not clear if both models will be available at that time. Asus claims that the smartphone will be priced at a mere $199, which is likely in reference to the lower-end model.
