Google Nexus 7 (2012) receives Android 5.0.2 OTA update

Google started rolling out Android 5.0.1 as the official Lollipop update for the HTC One M8 and HTC One M7 Google Play edition devices earlier this month. Last week, Google started rolling out the Android 5.0.1 OTA update to the Nexus 5 and Nexus 6 on T-Mobile. The company followed up by releasing the Android 5.0.1 factory images for the Nexus 5.

Now it seems a new update - Android 5.0.2 is available in the form of a factory image for the original Nexus 7.

The 2012 version of the Nexus 7 never received Android 5.0.1, and instead is going straight to the new build. That could indicate that the Android 5.0.2 update is specifically meant for the original Nexus 7. It is not known if Google plans to release this update to other Nexus devices.

In addition to the factory images, Google has also started rolling out the Android 5.0.2 OTA update (LRX22G) to the Nexus 7 from 2012. The update is said to fix an issue that the tablet has with storage, and another issue that deals with the alarm.

Ideally, users should install the OTA update when it is available for their tablets and not rely on factory images for updates. Factory Images are usually meant as a fix for those who have customized their Android devices with ROMs and patches and want to revert back to their stock state. Another use for the Factory Image would be for those who have rooted their Android device and will miss the opportunity to receive an OTA update. By flashing the Factory Image on their phone or tablet, the device owner can receive the update.
