Apple sells 5 million iPhone 5 units in first three days

The Apple iPhone 5 had a great start with 2 million pre-orders, but it doesn’t seam like its done with setting records as Apple has announced that they has sold 5 million units since its launch on September 21.

Despite some criticism with the design and its underlying  iOS 6.0 software it looks like the sixth generation iPhone is going on to do very well for itself.

Last year the Apple iPhone 4S sold over 4 million units over its first weekend of market availability, while the Apple iPhone 4 only sold just 1.7 million units when it debuted back in 2010.

The iPhone 5 launched on September 21 in 9 countries and will be available in an additional 22 countries on September 28. The device is expected to reach 100 markets by the end of this year. Despite several carriers offering subsidized deals for the device, the iPhone 5 can cost you at least $650 if you prefer it unlocked, making it one of the more expensive smartphones in the market.

With iPhone 5 pre-orders exceeding the initial supply, potential buyers are left waiting until October before they will get a chance at their brand new toy. As the roll out continues, it will be interesting to see how well the newest iPhone end up doing.
