Samsung announces Galaxy A50 and Galaxy A30 smartphones

While Samsung may have unveiled its flagship smartphones ahead of MWC 2019, they also had some of them saved for the conference in Barcelona. The newly unveiled Galaxy A50 and Galaxy A30 are the newest members of the A-Series, focussing on “the essential features” customers are looking for.

Display

Both handsets look physically identical in front, featuring 6.4-inch Super AMOLED Infinity-U displays. The U refers to the small notch on the top of the display which houses the front-facing camera on both devices. The Galaxy A50 comes with a 25-megapixel front camera, while the Galaxy A30 has a 16-megapixel sensor in front.

The back of the device is made of glossy plastic panels to keep their prices low, rather than aluminum or glass, which Samsung reserves for its flagships. The Galaxy A30 opts for a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner, while the Galaxy A50 makes use of an optical in-display scanner.

Cameras

Both smartphones have a vertical laid out camera set up on the rear. Both support a variety of AI-enhancements, while Bixby Vision which allows you to use the camera to shop online, translate text, or find information.

The Galaxy A50 has a triple camera setup on the rear, which consists of a 25-megapixel primary sensor with an f/1.7 aperture, an 8-megapixel wide-angle sensor, and a dedicated 5-megapixel depth sensor for background blurring.

The Galaxy A30 has a dual camera setup, which consists of a 16-megapixel main sensor with an f/1.7 aperture, and a 5-megapixel wide-angle sensor.

Other Hardware

The Galaxy A50 is powered by an Exynos 9610 chipset and is available with 64GB of storage and 4GB of RAM or 128GB storage and 6GB of RAM.

Meanwhile, the Galaxy A30 is powered by an Exynos 7904 chipset and is offered with 32GB of storage and 3GB of RAM or 64GB of storage and 4GB of RAM.

Both smartphones come with 4,000mAh batteries, support for Samsung Pay and Fast Charging, microSD card expansion and run Android 9.0 Pie.

Release and Availability

Both the Galaxy A50 and the Galaxy A30 are expected to go on sale next month, but Samsung has yet to announce their prices. Initially, both handsets are expected to be limited to certain Asian markets before expanding their availability to Europe
