Honor Magic 2 announced

The Honor Magic 2 was made official today as the first smartphone in the world to feature a total of six cameras. This Android smartphone was first teased back at the IFA expo in September and has been promised to be launched globally.

Design

In a landscape dominated by notches, its refreshing to see an all-screen design on a modern smartphone. The front cameras have been hidden behind a slider-mechanism which pops out when needed. We've already seen this type of design used on the Oppo Find X, and the recently announced Xiaomi Mi Mix 3, but there are still very few handsets in the market offering this type of bezel-free all-screen design.

The whole upper half of the phone slides up to reveal the three-camera setup in front. Honor has not used a magnetic setup like Xiaomi for their slider-mechanism and it doesn't have a snapping sound when it opens. The main concern with these slider type phones are their durability and we are curious to see how the Honor Magic 2 fairs in that department.

The Honor Magic 2 is made of metal and glass and is offered in a few color options with the company's signature gradient hues.

Display

The handset features a 6.4-inch FHD+ display with a 2340 x 1080 pixel resolution. The manufacturer has outfitted an optical fingerprint scanner under the display which adds a layer of security without the need a sperate physical scanner.

Camera

We've seen the Samsung Galaxy A9 with four cameras, and the LG V40 with five cameras. Now we meet the first smartphone in the world to feature a total of six cameras.

On the rear, you have a 24-megapixel primary camera, a 16-megapixel super wide-angle camera, and a 16-megapixel monochrome camera.

On the front, you have a 16-megapixel primary camera, a 2-megapixel depth sensing for bokeh portraits and another 2-megapixel camera that enables 3D-sensing for face unlock on the Magic 2.

Hardware

The Honor Magic 2 is offered in a 128GB storage option with 6GB of RAM and a 256GB storage option with 8GB of RAM. The handset uses the Huawei Kirin 980, the first 7nm chipset for Android. Honor has packed in a generous 3400mAh battery and Huawei's ultra-fast 40W charging.

Release and Availability

The Honor Magic 2 is now available for reservation and will be released next month. The pricing for the handset is as follows:
  • 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage - ¥3799.00 (around $551)
