The new watchOS 5 will also come preinstalled on the brand new Apple Watch Series 4, which features a larger display and improved dual-core processor. If you are looking to install the new firmware on your existing Apple Watch, you can follow our guide on how to install and update your Apple Watch.

How to install watchOS 5 on your Apple Watch

watchOS 5 is compatible with Apple Watch Series 1, Series 2, Series 3 and Apple Watch Series 4. Apple has officially ended support for the original Apple Watch Series 0 with this release so if you are still running that hardware then it’s maybe time to think about an upgrade.

Step 1) Open the Watch companion app on your iPhone.

Step 2) On the app click the My Watch tab, Navigate to General > Software Update.

Step 3) The app will now check with Apple for any available updates for your Apple Watch. If an update is available, it will be displayed on your iPhone.

Step 4) Click the 'Download and Install' button, and agree to the Terms and Conditions you will be presented with.

Step 5) The Watch companion app, will automatically connect to your Apple Watch and install the update.

An Apple boot logo will appear on your Apple Watch along with a circular progress indicator which shows the installation progress. Once the update is complete, the Apple Watch will reboot automatically. You will then be presented with a secondary progress bar that shows that the new update is being prepared and configured. When ready for use, the Watch will reboot again and the normal watch face will be presented.
