Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 announced

Qualcomm has announced the Snapdragon 636 mobile platform, which is built using the 14nm FinFET process. This chipset offers a 40% increase in performance compared to the Snapdragon 630 and comes with the Qualcomm Kryo 260 CPU.

According to Qualcomm the Snapdragon 636 will bring "significant" improvements in gaming, with the display, and with overall performance. The Snapdragon 636 mobile platform features the Adreno 509 GPU, which provides a 10% improvement in gaming and browsing. The display improvements come through Qualcomm's TruPalette and EcoPix features which are part of the Adreno Visual Processing Subsystem. The Assertive Display feature means you will be able to see the screen better in less than optimal lighting, and FHD+ resolution (1080 x 2160) is supported. The octa-core CPU maxes out at a clock speed of 1.8GHz, and the chip can carry up to 8GB of RAM. Quick Charge 4.0 is also included.

The 14-bit Qualcomm Spectra 160 ISP will work with sensors up to 24MP, providing zero shutter lag, smooth zoom, zippy auto focus and true-to-life colors. The Qualcomm Aqstic audio codec supports Hi-Fi audio. Distortion is low and dynamic range is high. The chipset will include the Snapdragon X12 4G LTE modem which should offer peak download speeds of 600Mbps.

The Snapdragon 636 is expected to start shipping next month.
