Android 7.0 will be officially known as Nougat

Android 7.0 will be officially known as NougatGoogle has officially announced that the next version of its Android operating system, Android 7.0 will be officially known as Nougat. And so, the company's trend to use dessert names for its mobile operating system updates continues with the newest iteration.

Google, during its I/O developer conference announced that it would be taking suggestions for what to name its next update to Android. Nachos, Naan, Nectar and Nut brittle were among some of the suggestions on Google's Android N website. However Google insisted that it would have the final say, and Nougat came out the winner.

Nougat joins a long list of sweet treats that Android updates offered with each iteration:
  • Android 1.5 - Cupcake
  • Android 1.6 - Donut
  • Android 2.1 - Eclair
  • Android 2.2 - Froyo
  • Android 2.3 - Gingerbread
  • Android 3.0 - Honeycomb
  • Android 4.0 - Ice Cream Sandwich
  • Android 4.1 - Jelly Bean
  • Android 4.4 - KitKat
  • Android 5.0 - Lollipop
  • Android 6.0 - Marshmallow
  • Android 7.0 - Nougat
The Android 7.0 Nougat update is expected to bring several new features and improvements to the platform, including multi-window support, a better Doze functionality, seamless auto-updates and more.
