After a lot of speculation and leaks, the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge was officially unveiled during today's Unpacked 2015 event at MWC 2015 alongside the regular Samsung Galaxy S6. The Edge variants has a curved display, wrapping around both its sides - unlike the Samsung Galaxy Note Edge, which only has its curve on the right. Besides the curved display, both Galaxy S6 models are nearly identical, featuring a brand new premium design and the latest smartphone hardware powering them.
Hardware
The Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge has a 5.1 inch Super AMOLED display with a 1440 x 2560 pixel Quad HD resolution. The display will follow its predecessors to offer very impressive color accuracy and sharp images. On the Galaxy S6 Edge, the display is meant as a fresh design, giving the device an almost bezeless look as a result.
Unlike the Galaxy Note Edge, the curved display on the Galaxy S6 Edge doesn't offer as much functionality. On the Note Edge, the side screen acted as an extension to the display, offering various types of panels with information. Still the side displays do offer limited functionality, like displaying a clock or colorful notification, but they don't have the functionality to offer apps like the Note Edge did. In fact, the curves are much less pronounced than what we've seen on the Note Edge, allowing the frame of the smartphone to be thick enough to house the power and volume buttons, and of course – to be comfortably held by its user.
Besides the curved display, Samsung is also introducing a premium design, which starts with the an aluminum unibody case. Samsung claims the metal is 50% stronger than anything found on competitors smartphones, and made sure to take a jab at the #bedgate issues faced by the Apple iPhone 6 Plus. The aluminium frame is sandwiched between two Gorilla Glass 4 panels. The result is a premium look like we have not seen from Samsung in the past, but warmly welcomed nevertheless.
Despite their aluminum build, Samsung has kept the Galaxy S6 Edge and the Galaxy S6 lighter than the Samsung Galaxy S5. In fact, the at 132 grams, the Galaxy S6 Edge is 13 grams lighter than the Galaxy S5. Meanwhile, the 142.1 x 70.1 x 7.0 mm measurements, make it thinner and wider than its predecessor.
Unfortunately the new design comes at a price, as both the Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 Edge no longer have IP67 ratings, which mean they are no longer waterproof.

Even with the premium materials, Samsung has retained their tradition of color, offering the new Galaxy S6 Edge in White Pearl, Black Sapphire, Gold Platinum, and Green Emerald.
For their new flagship, Samsung has decided to rely on its own Exynos processors instead of Qualcomm's SoCs. The processor employs the new 14nm architecture process, which should offer more efficient, yet less power hungry results. You get a 64-bit octa-core processor with ARM Mali T760 graphics and 3GB of super-fast DDR4 RAM.
The handset's internal memory employs Sammy's brand-new UFS 2.0 technology, which should deliver performance speeds up to 2.7 times faster than today's eMMC 5.0 tech. The Galaxy S6 edge will come in three storage variants - 32 GB, 64 GB, and 128 GB, there will be no external SD expansion slots.

Camera
The Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge comes with an all-new 16MP camera. The aperture size has been upgraded to F1.9, which should provide better light capturing, and shallower depth of field for better focus options and effects. OIS, Selective focus, HDR, and 4K video are expected to make a return, and a quick-access feature has been added – users can now double click the home button, which will bring up the camera app in just 0.7 seconds, according to Samsung.
The front facing camera is also an impressive upgrade – the sensor has a 5 MP resolution and also sports an F1.9 aperture size, and Samsung promises great performance in low-light conditions.
Samsung wanted to make it clear than their camera could outperform Apple's current offering and showed demonstrations of both units side by side during their presentation.
Battery
The Galaxy S6 edge sports a 2,600 mAh power box and employs a quick charging tech, which, according to Samsung, will allow the user to get a 4 hours worth of charge for just 10 minutes of being plugged in a wall charger. The handset also has wireless charging tech, which is compliant with both major standards – WPC and PMA!
Software
For both the Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 Edge, Samsung has totally redesigned its TouchWiz user interface, which will overlay Android 5.0 Lollipop. The updated user interface is snappier and faster than ever before, offering the very basic Samsung-branded experience from the box. If anyone finds themselves missing a certain feature that used to be on their old Galaxy S handset – the Galaxy Apps store will be the place to find it.
As for what functions will actually be on the handset from the get-go – S Health, S Voice, Quick Connect, and Ultra Power Saving mode will be making their reappearance, and a new Themes app will allow users to customize the looks of the interface to their own liking. There will, of course, be an app for the brand-new Samsung Pay service, and all of Google's apps will be on board. Microsoft's Skype, OneDrive, and OneNote will also be installed out of the box, and users will be gifted 115 GB of OneDrive storage space for two years. New owners should also expect to be greeted by pre-loaded Facebook and WhatsApp applications.
Pricing and Availability
The Galaxy S6 edge will be available globally starting from April 10, 2015 with 32GB / 64GB / 128GB storage options. Samsung has still not made the price official, but it will likely cost around $750 off contract (or $200 with a two-year contract).Press Release
