HTC introduces "Uh-Oh" protection, to replace your water or impact-damaged One M8 or M9 for free during the first year of warranty

Ahead of the event that's scheduled, the company has announced its new 'UH OH' customer protection program, which will be available to US customers who purchase the new HTC One M9 or a new HTC One M8 after April 10, 2015. 

The program makes owners of a new HTC flagship eligible for one free replacement within the first year in the case of a cracked screen, water damage, or carrier switching. Additionally, customers who don't pick up 'UH OH' within the first 12 months will receive $100 towards the purchase of a future HTC One smartphones.

HTC 'UH OH' Protection provides consumers who damage their new HTC One M9 with an untimely fall onto the pavement or into a toilet with a free phone replacement within 12 months of purchase. Consumers who don’t opt for 'UH OH' Protection with their M8 or M9 within the first 12 months of buying the device will receive a $100 credit towards the purchase of a future HTC One smartphone.

According to HTC America president Jason Mackenzie, “While other smartphone companies look at uh-oh moments as a way to profit off of you, we are focused on adding value to owning an HTC One."

How do I use HTC's Uh-Oh protection

In that unfortunate moment you damage your brand new smartphone, you can call can call HTC Care at 1 (866) 449-8358, and an HTC Care team member will arrange a replacement phone shipped out to you overnight. If you backed up your smartphone before the accident, you'll be able to restore its contents from the cloud via HTC Backup.

However it is important to keep in mind that there will be limiations to the replacement, so it is important to read the the service's terms and conditions beforehand. For example, you won't be applicable for replacement if the device's IMEI number has been made illegible, if you modified your phone (likely includes rooting your device), or you handled your smartphone recklessly.
