VLC media player updated (2.2.0) across desktop and mobile platforms

VideoLAN and the VLC development teams have released a new version of VLC Media Player (2.2.0) along with ports of the popular cross platform media player for iOS, Android (including Android TV), WinRT (Windows RT and Windows 8) and Windows Phone.

The desktop version of VLC has been updated to version 2.2.0 and is available across Windows, Mac and Linux and can be downloading using the following link.



VLC version 2.2.0 (codenamed WeatherWax) has the following new features and improvements:
  • VLC automatically detects rotated videos and rotates them using hardware acceleration (on compatible platforms)!
  • TSupport for MP4/MOV, MKV and raw H264.
  • Resume playback where you left off. Previously supported on all the mobile versions of VLC, now available on the desktop.
  • Vastly improved support for UltraHD video codecs like VP9 and H265, including encoding.
  • New hardware acceleration mechanism, GPU 0-copy decoding, faster and implementations for Linux, Android, and Raspberry Pi. (Other OSes will have it in 3.0.0)
  • Extensions: supported since a long time, we now feature an in-app downloader for the desktop, like Firefox
  • Subtitles downloading extension
  • Compatibility with a very large number of unusual codecs
  • Vastly improved compatibility for problematic files in Ogg, MP4, and WMV.
  • Support for Digital Cinema Package to play native movie theater formats.
  • Experimental support of Interactive Menus of BluRays: BD-J
  • On OS X, we've updated the interface for Yosemite compatibility.

VLC for Android has an updated to version 1.1.0 with an improved user interface which matches Google's Material Design guidelines. The update also includes support for Android TV and is the first non-beta release on the Android platform. It is also the first non-beta release on Android.

VLC for Windows has been updated to version 1.1.0 and is available for the first time as a public beta. VLC for Windows is a universal app and is available across phones, tablets and PCs.

VLC for iOS has been out of commission since the release of iOS 8 last year. Now the updated version 2.4.1 is once again available for download for the iPhone and iPad through the Apple App Store.

This is expected to be a big year for the VLC team, with the upcoming version 3.0.0 release expected to bring hardware decoding and acceleration to more platforms, a better support for mp4, adaptive streaming and TS streams and a partial ChromeCast integration.
