[GUIDE] How to install the Windows 10 Preview for phones on your Lumia

Yesterday Microsoft released the first technical preview of Windows 10 for phones. Only a small subset of Windows Phone 8 devices are compatible with the first release, and since this is an early build of Windows 10 for phones, its probably not wise to install this on your day-to-day device.

So if you happen to have one of the supported devices around as a secondary device, you can follow our step by step guide on how to install the Windows 10 Preview for phones on your Lumia.

Prerequisites

  • In order to install Windows 10 for phones, you need to own one of the following Windows Phones
  • This device must be running the latest version of Windows Phone 8.1 (build 14219 recommended)
  • Backup all your important files and content... In case you have to wipe your device, you will no longer be able to access the files you have not backed up.
  • You need a strong internet connection and a Microsoft Account.
  • Make sure you have at least 8GB of free storage on your mobile device
  • Make sure your battery is appropriately (at least 50%) charged

Procedure

  1. Become a Windows Insider by signing up on insider.windows.com
  2. Download Windows Insider for Windows Phone from the Windows Phone Store.
  3. Launch the Windows Insider app and login with the same Microsoft Account you used to register as a "Widows Insider".
  4. Select one of the following methods to receive Windows 10 updates
    1. Insider Slow offers more stable Windows 10 releases, with fewer bugs and issues
    2. Insider Fast offers less stable Windows 10 releases, but at more regular intervals.
  5. Next you will be asked to accept the terms and conditions. Note that your warranty may be void by installing the Windows 10 technical preview on your phones.
  6. Finally review your selection, and select the check mark to complete the process.
  7. Now if you go to Settings > Phone Update > Check for Updates
An update will appear here when available, and you will be able to use the regular process of installing the Windows 10 Technical Preview on your Lumia device. In future, you can check for updates here, or allow your Windows Phone to automatically alert you when an update is available to you.

Windows 10 is finally here, and despite is limited availability users will be excited to try out the new features on their mobile devices. However, given the early stage that Windows 10 for phones is in, its likely that some users would want to revert back to Windows Phone 8.1, at least until Windows 10 is better suited for day to day use.
