Verizon adds more data options for pre-paid customers, but won't rollover unused data

Verizon announced that they will be adding extra data and more choices for their pre-paid customers. For $45 a month the carrier offers unlimited talk, unlimited text and 1GB of data, up from 500MB previously offered. Additionally, by agreeing to the carrier's Auto Pay service, you will receive an additional 500MB of data for a total of 1.5GB of data per month.

You can get an additional 500MB by paying $5 per month, but the data will have to be used within 30 days. You can also add an additional 1GB for $10 or 3GB for $20, but the data will have to be consumed within 90 days or it will expire.

These new announcements follow T-Mobile's introduction of Simply Prepaid plans for their pre-paid customers and the unCarrier's Data Stash, which allows customers using a Simple Choice plan with a 3GB data bucket or higher, 10GB of data to use. After that data is consumed, any amount of data unused each month is rolled over to the next month, and must be used within 12 months before it expires.

Even AT&T followed suit and will be offering rollover data for their customers starting January 25. AT&T's Mobile Share Value customers can roll over unused data to the next month when it must be used, or it will expire.

Verizon however doesn't seem to follow this time, with CFO Fran Shammo stating "We're a leader, not a follower." He also added that rolling over unused data just to keep a price-conscious subscriber from leaving doesn't make "financial sense" for Verizon.

In any case, it looks like Verizon is confident that offering rollover data won't benefit them, and they are not really worried about the customers who may choose to switch over to their competitors in favor of more data.
