Ting to offer GSM service by February 2015

Ting is a Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MNVO), with great service plans and a reputation for really good customer service. The mobile service reseller is owned by Canadian internet services company, Tucows, and takes unconventional approach to its services plans, allowing customers pay for only what they use.

Currently Ting operates solely on Sprint's network. But beginning next February, they will offer services on an unnamed GSM network.

Ting will continue operations on Sprint’s network as well, and determining the network to be used will be dictated by the device a customer brings with them, or wants to buy from the company.

“In short, when Ting on GSM is live in February 2015, there will be no more waiting for the latest iPhone or Android device to be allowed on Ting. If it can be purchased unlocked, or if it can be carrier unlocked, it can come. What’s more, better than 80% of smartphones made in the last couple of years will be compatible with Ting. That will include the unlocked iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 Plus.”

Ting's service plans can run as low as $9 per-month for access and 100 voice minutes. An average smartphone user that texts and uses data more than talking can use up to 100 voice minutes, 4,800 global SMS/MMS, and 2GB of data for $49 per-month. It is a bit more complex than all the “unlimited” options out there, but the a-la carte shopping can save real money if you are dialed in on your usage patterns.
