Huawei Honor 6 Plus officially announced with dual camera

The Huawei Honor 6 Plus was officially announced by the company, as its first smartphone to feature a dual-camera setup. The handset features all you would expect from a mid-high end device including a 5.5 inch full 1080p HD display device and a Huawei built Kirin 935 chipset clocked at 1.8GHz. But its highlight is clearly its interesting camera setup.

Much like the Duo Camera system on the HTC One M8, the Honor 6 Plus has two cameras on its rear. Huawei refers to this as “Symmetrical dual camera technology“. The rear camera can take 13 MP shots, but actually consists of two 8 MP sensors with huge 1.85 micron pixel size, and a dedicated ISP is tasked with the merging and interpolation. One of the cameras dons f/2.0 aperture and autofocus, while the other sports f/2.4 and a fixed focus setup.

The use of two sensors with two lens kits allows for much more light to be raked in when taking a shot, thus exposing night scenes better, and also focusing much faster – Huawei claims 0.1s focusing time, which might make it one of the fastest mobile cameras around. The dual-camera kit is framed with zinc alloy in order to keep the sensors in parallel without any misalignments, which is a pretty important feat for such a twin arrangement.

This dual camera setup allows the Honor 6 Plus to perform the same feats we have seen on the HTC One M8, but there’s also other features that allegedly bring quality noise reduction and low-light performance, which you can see detailed in the video below.

Other specs of the Honor 6 Plus include 32GB of internal storage which can be expanded by an additional 128GB of microSD, an 5MP front camera for video calls, a 3600 mAh battery and 3GB of RAM. The entire hardware is housed inside a 150.46 x 75.68 x 7.5mm chassis

The Huawei Honor 6 Plus will be available for pre-order starting tomorrow though the company’s online store, with free shipping starting a week after. The handset has been priced at 1999 yuan (~$323) for the 3G version, and 2499 yuan (~403) for the 4G LTE one. Both models feature dual SIM card slots, with one slot capable of taking micro SIMs, and the other a combined nano SIM/microSD slot.
