7 million Dropbox usernames and passwords leaked online; Dropbox denies hack

7 million users Dropbox have found their usernames and passwords have been stolen. The alleged hacker has already leaked 400 of these accounts on Pastebin and is threatening to release more if he is compensated through Bitcoin donations.

Dropbox has denied that it has been hacked, and a spokesperson for the storage service company claimed that the usernames and passwords were stolen from other services. According to Dropbox, the majority of passwords, had expired a long time ago. It is unclear at this hour how many usernames and passwords actually opened up a Dropbox account.

"Dropbox has not been hacked. These usernames and passwords were unfortunately stolen from other services and used in attempts to log in to Dropbox accounts. We’d previously detected these attacks and the vast majority of the passwords posted have been expired for some time now. All other remaining passwords have been expired as well." - Dropbox

In any case it is always advised that you immediately change your Dropbox password and enable the two-step verification under Settings. The two-step verification combines a password with a six-digit security code that is sent through your phone every time you enter your password. Additionally, Dropbox suggests that you use strong unique passwords when the need to create one rises.
