Six Android alternatives to the Apple iPhone 5c

Apple recently launched an 8GB version of their iPhone 5c, in an attempt to win over a wider audience with its affordable £429 off contract price. Despite its lower price, the 8GB iPhone 5c has some strong Android competitors which come with added advantages and sometimes even lower prices.

LG G2 - £299 (16GB) | £339.99 (32GB)

The LG G2 is a powerful device offered at a very affordable price. It has a 5.2 inch full 1080p display compared to the 4 inch Retina display (640x1136 pixel) on the iPhone. It also comes with a 13MP camera with optical image stabilization and a quad-core processor, compared to the 8MP camera and dual-core processor on the iPhone 5c.

Google Nexus 5 - £299 (16GB) / £339 (32GB)

The Nexus 5 is also built by LG and offers great value for its cost.  The device is priced between £299 and £339 on Google Play, offering a 5-inch display and the latest “pure” Android 4.4 KitKat, with speedy updates from Google in the future. You get an 8MP camera with optical image stabilization, but the camera has its share of issues, and battery life could be better.

Sony Xperia Z1 - £399.99

The Sony Xperia Z1 has been succeeded by the Sony Xperia Z2, which is due to launch next month. Luckily this has resulted in Sony's previous flagship facing a discounted price. For £399 it’s still worth a look, offering a larger screen and double the storage of the cheapest iPhone 5c for less cash.

HTC One - £372

While HTC is readying their successor to the HTC One, the former flagship is being discounted to around £365 SIM-free. Unlike the iPhone 5c, it boasts a metal-backed design, a larger, higher-resolution display and four times the storage in the 32GB base model. The HTC One maybe a year old at this point, but it’s also worth remembering the iPhone 5c is essentially a rebadged iPhone 5 in a plastic casing.

Motorola Moto X - £306

The Motorola Moto X offers unique features like touchless control - the ability to activate the phone, even when it’s in sleep mode - and active display, which pulses notifications on-screen when the display is turned off. The handset costs around £306 for its 16GB model. While its specs may not match its competitors on paper, Motorola has optimized the hardware to handle its tasks as efficiently as most Android flagships. Moto X also offers a highly ergonomic design and near-stock Android 4.4 KitKat out of the box.

Samsung Galaxy S4 - £320

Like many of the flagships on this list, the Galaxy S4 is also getting set to give way to its successor the Galaxy S5. This means the former flagship can be yours for a little over £300. The Galaxy S4 comes with a 5-inch 1080p display, a 13-megapixel camera and several software enhancements from Samsung like its hover-touch.

Its clear that Apple needs to rethink its strategy on Affordability unless it wants to be slowly overtaken by its competitors.
