[Android app] Microsoft Office Mobile, now free to use

Microsoft Office Mobile for Android has been updated to version 15.0.2720.2000 and is now free to use. Previously users required an Office 365 subscription in order to use the app, but now you can use it for free, as long as you are a home user. Business users will still require an Office 365 subscription to create and manage documents.

Microsoft Office Mobile for Android is integrated with OneDrive and SharePoint, supports editing of documents from e-mail attachments, and is designed to look as good as possible on small screens. One of the best features of Office for Android is Resume Reading - When opening a Word document from OneDrive on your phone, it automatically resumes at the place where you left off reading, even if you last viewed the document on your device. It's little gems like this that make Office work more comfortable than ever.

Previously Android users required a $10 monthly subscription in order to use the app. However there is still one catch. Microsoft Office Mobile for Android will only work on smartphones. If the app detects you are working on a tablet, it will refuse to install. That's unfortunate, because even 5 to 5.5-inch smartphone displays still feel somewhat small for comfortable document editing. However those who own the Sony Xperia Z Ultra or any similar tablet-phones can fully take advantage of Office Mobile for Android. It is currently unknown if Microsoft plans to extend their suite to Android tablets anytime in the near future.

This new version of Office Mobile for Android comes in the wake of Microsoft releasing Office for iPad, which includes standalone versions of Word, Excel and PowerPoint optimized for Apple's tablet. Office for iPad still requires an Office 365 subscription.
