Sony Xperia Z2 officially announced - 4K video, stereo speakers and 3GB of RAM

Sony Xperia Z2

The Sony Xperia Z2 has been officially announced during Sony's MWC event. The new flagship comes just six months after the previous Xperia Z1 flagship was released. It looks like Sony has a clear focus on mobile now that it has sidelined its VIAO computer lineup.

The Xperia Z2 comes with a 5.2 inch 1080p Triluminos display, with a new imaging technology, dubbed Live Colour LED. One of the shortcomings of the Xperia Z1 was its poor viewing angles and its clear that Sony has rectified this with the Z2.

The Xperia Z2 comes with the same 20.7 MP 1/2.3-type Exmor RS for mobile CMOS image sensor with 1.1 micron pixels, and Sony G Lens cover found on the Z1. Like its predecessor the Z1 will make use of the faster processor and additional RAM for extra camera functions.

For example, not only is the XPeria Z2 capable of capturing 4K video, but it  now adds its Timeshift option for video, not only for stills. You can shoot 120fps footage, and select where the footage should turn into slow-motion one.

Add to these the real-time effects you can apply during shootin, like colouring, image trails, mirror and motion effects, as well as the AR effect you can choose before you press the camera key, and the video aspect all of a sudden becomes dramatically upgraded from the Z1. You are now able to create short and sweet Vine video clips directly from the camera interface, too, and underwater at that, if the situation calls for it.

The still shots are also getting new options, such as Background defocus. This new camera option will captures two photos at different focus settings, and blends together the different depths, leading to a blurred out background for more artsy photos.

Sony has also included stereo speakers with the Xperia Z2 which combines with the amplifier Sony dubbed S-Force Front Surround sound. Sony also offers digital noise-cancelling technology, when paired with Sony's MDR NC31EM Noise Cancelling Headset, reducing up to 98% of ambient noise around you.

The powerful internal on the Xperia Z2 include a 2.3GHz quad-core Snapdragon 801 processor with 4G LTE support and a generous 3GB of RAM. You also get a long lasting 3200 mAh battery, packed into the slim 8.2 mm frame.

Sony says that its new Xperia Z2 flagship will be available globally as soon as next month, so no more waiting is in order between the announcement, and the actual release. To recap - in comparison with the Z1, the Z2 is thinner, with a larger 5.2" display, faster processor, more RAM, larger battery, stereo speakers, and runs on the newest Android 4.4.2 KitKat. Would you consider upgrading ?
