Samsung Gear Fit announced - Tracks your health on a curved display
The new Gear 2 and Gear Neo smartwatches were not the only wearables that Samsung had in store at this year's MWC. The Korean manufacturer also unveiled the Samsung Gear Fit, a health tracking wearable device during their Unpacked 5 event in Barcelona.

The Gear Fit features a 1.84 inch curved Super AMOLED display with a 432 by 128 pixel resolution, which Samsung says is the first of its kind on a health-tracking wearable.  Interestingly the Gear Fit runs a real-time operating system (RTOS) instead of the Android platform used on Samsung's phones or the Tizen software used on its new Gear smartwatches.

RTOS is a simple platform developed by Samsung, which processes data significantly faster than other, more complex operating systems. Although RTOS can run on ”limited computing hardware”, it still comes with multitasking capabilities and supports task priorities. Thanks to its simplicity, Samsung's wearable platform allows the Gear Fit to squeeze out even more battery life than its peers, the Samsung Gear 2 and Samsung Gear 2 Neo.

The simplicity of RTOS does not allow developers to create 3rd party apps for the Gear Fit. Still, this might prove to be good for users, as the health-centric Gear Fit wearable will most probably provide them with more accurate data and feedback.
The Samsung Gear Fit will offer a pedometer, exercise tracker, heart rate monitor, sleep tracker, stopwatch, and timer for the fitness side of things. Additionally the Gear Fit will also bring you notifications of new emails, calls, SMS, and other apps, as well as options to control your media from the band. Samsung claims that the Gear Fit can offer 3 to 4 days of battery life with "typical usage" which is quite impressive. The device even offers customization in the form of swappable bands, available in Black, Orange and Mocha Grey.

The Gear Fit will be available globally starting April, alongside the new Samsung Galaxy S5 flagship, but failed to reveal the pricing for the wearable device. Samsung did claim that the Gear fit will be compatible with 20 Galaxy devices, but did not say if they planned to offer support for non Galaxy devices.
