Winamp will not exist after December 20

Anyone remember Winamp? We won't blame you if you dont... The once popular media player has found itself in the shadow of iTunes, Spotify, internet radio applications and streaming music applications. Winamp was the go to app for those who wanted to stream music on their computers just 10 years ago. So what happened?

Some would say the slow death began once Winamp was acquired by AOL in 1999. The developers have since stunted support for the desktop versions only releasing updates for Winamp for Android, as recently as last month. Winamp still has a user base of millions of people around the world, and it is estimated that AOL still generates upwards of $6 million per year from the product.

Winamp was developed by Justin Frankel and Dmitry Boldyrev in 1997. Frankel was dubbed by Rolling Stone magazine as the "world's most dangerous geek." It looks like the culture of Winamp and Nullsoft has never truly been compatible with what has become a corporate culture at AOL.
