[Guide] How to root your Motorola Xoom

If you own a Motorola Xoom you probably know that Google has stopped supporting the device. This means you will have to Root your device and install custom ROMs if you want to install newer versions of Android.

There are several methods of rooting your device. But we have gone through several of them and come up with an easy guide which should quickly get you rooted and ready to install the ROM of your choice.

[NOTE] Rooting requires you to modify the normal operation of your device. This is not recommended unless you fully understand the risks.

1. Download and install the Android SDK.
   -
2. Download Motorola Xoom Universal Root
   • Place the file in Android SDK Tools folder (eg: C:\android-sdk\platform-tools)

3. Download ClockworkMod Recovery (6.0.2.3)
   • Place the file in your external microSD card and the Android SDK Tools folder..

4. Connect your device to your computer
   -
5. Open the Android SDK Tools folder
    -
6. Hold Shift + Right click in the folder and select 'Open command window here'
   • Type adb reboot bootloader
   • If your bootloader is locked type: fastboot oem unlock   [NOTE] This will wipe your device and erase all data. Please make sure you backup first. fastboot reboot
   • Enter fastboot mode on reboot by pressing the Volume Up button and type fastboot flash recovery recovery-clockwork-6.0.2.3-wingray.img fastboot reboot

7. When the device reboots press Volume Down and enter Clockwork Mod Recovery. Make selections by using the Volume Up and Volume Down buttons and use the Power button to accept your selection.
   • Select install zip from
   • Select choose zip from external sdcard
     • Select choose zip from sdcard if you place your file in the internal memory
   • Select the Xoom-Universal-Root.zip and flash it to your device
   • Select Go Back and Reboot system now.

Once your device has rebooted, your Motorola Xoom will be fully rooted and ready for installing any custom ROMs, apps or MODs. Leave us a comment on how the guide worked out for you.
