Microsoft has paid Nokia $250 million to use Windows Phone

For any Android fans who were wondering why Nokia chose to use Windows Phone on their handsets, you may find this fact quite interesting. Nokia's holiday quarter results are out, and while they have still posted a loss ($1.4 billion) they have also revealed that Microsoft has paid them to use Windows Phone.

Nokia has received a sum of $250 billion as a platform support payment from Microsoft to make Windows Phone devices.

This is just one of more payments to come Nokia's way in support of Nokia choosing to use Windows Phone as their smartphone platform of choice.

“Our broad strategic agreement with Microsoft includes platform support payments from Microsoft to us as well as software royalty payments from us to Microsoft”. ”We have a competitive software royalty structure, which includes minimum software royalty commitments.”

This suggests that Nokia may be paying less in royalties compared to the other Windows Phone OEMs like Samsung and HTC which in turn could sour their relationships.
