[Guide] How To Install ClockworkMod Recovery on your Android device


ClockworkMod Recovery (CWM) is a custom recovery tool for Android devices which replaces the stock recovery tool. You can use CWM to backup or restore your device, flash custom ROMs/themes/apps, install updates to Android OS and  do much more.

This guide will walk you through the steps of installing ClockworkMod Recovery on your Android device.

NOTE - This method should work without any issues on most Android handsets. But non traditional handsets like the HTC HD2 or the B&N Nook Color will require additional steps which cannot be found here.

Requirements
  • Root your device. there are several guides on how to root specific devices on specific Android versions. You can find some guides on this blog or by searching through a modding site like XDA Developers. You can also search for specific rooting guides on Google.
Step-by-Step Guide
  1. Download ROM Manager or ROM Manager Premium and install it on your device.
  2. Launch the ROM Manager and select Flash ClockworkMod Recovery from the main menu.
  3. You will be asked to confirm your phone model. If you are not sure of the version you are using check on Google and make sure you select your correct model.
  4. Your device will reboot once CWM is flashed.
  5. You can boot into CWM by,
    • Launch ROM Manager and selecting Reboot into Recovery
    • Other other option is to reboot into CWM manually
To reboot into CWM manually,
  1. Turn off your device by holding the power button
  2. Press the button combination for your particular device. Each device has it's own combination so check Google for your device.
    • Volume Down + Power Key is common for most devices
That's it you have booted into ClockworkMod Recovery on your Android device.
